The Morehouse Story Begins

Morehouse began producing mustard in Los Angeles with a simple goal: to create a consistently great product for the local community. From the beginning, quality and craftsmanship were at the heart of the business.

1913

A New California Plant

As demand grew, Morehouse opened its first California plant along San Fernando Road—which was still a dirt road at the time. Early delivery vehicles and product displays helped introduce Morehouse mustard to more families throughout the region.

1919

The Oakland Plant Opens

The first wheel at the Oakland plant turned on September 1, 1919. The small facility occupied the site of an old saloon near the Emeryville racetrack and initially produced only mustard. With one mill and 48-inch stones turning at 250 revolutions per minute, the operation produced approximately 12½ gallons of mustard per hour.

1927

The Latter Family Carries the Business Forward

In 1927, the Latters purchased the Oakland factory and began a new chapter as Morehouse Mustard and Supply Company. The acquisition included exclusive rights to the Morehouse brand throughout Northern California.

George Frederick Latter and Harold F. Latter operated the business as a partnership beginning February 1, 1927. To support the company’s continued growth, they replaced the original facility with a larger brick building.

1969

Morehouse Foods, Inc. Is Formed

On April 1, 1969, the Latter family acquired the Los Angeles operation from the Morehouse-Smoot owners, bringing the company’s California operations together.
On October 1, 1969, Harold F. Latter, Harold Jr., David, and George incorporated the business as Morehouse Foods, Inc. This marked a new chapter in a company already shaped by decades of family leadership, manufacturing innovation, and commitment to growth.
